Well I cant believe it’s December! They say the older you get the quicker the years go and it certainly seems true of this year!
The November charit knit was a “select affair” but then there was more cake for us! Ginger this month. A number of baby items are waiting to be sent and I am investgating where best to send them and will wait until January’s group to forward things as still hope that they can go locally.
I am still investigating local avenues and the PDSA have confirmed that they would be very grateful for items that would be suitable for cats! Blankets, toys etc…I have a number of squares (9×9 or 7×7) that I will put these togeather over Christmas with the help of my speedy mum!
The church where we meet have also done a fair few blankets and these have been sent to Romania. The local homeless group would be very grateful for any wooly hats and socks.
I must admit that I have been quite remiss due to making my Christmas presents and am sure that many are in the same boat!
As always feel free to get in touch with questions about groups!

Just a quick update for those that may be interested!! I’ve found a number of charities that we can support locally…there is a homeless group in Cardiff who are happy to recive the blankets that have been made (mainly by people in church where we meet before the big knitters group began) so they will be going there and I hope to update with some information soon so people who want to know can!
I’ve also spoken, by email, to a local charity who do things for Romania and are well known. Again more information is on the way!!
I did speak to the special care baby unit who will recive hats and cardi’s and the rest, for now, will be sent elsewhere. Also if people want to do any toys then they can be sold to raise funds for postage etc…it does add up – my first parcel cost £13+ to send!!
Donations of wool always appreciated. There are still some supplies but with growing people, growing wool is also needed! Some people who knit regularly (& with great speed!!) are pensioners and on small income so all donations welcome!
I will do the dates for next years groups soon…just need to find a diary!

Lesley’s premature baby cardi for the charity knitting group!
Well we’ve now done one of each group and had about 5 people at each. There was cake at both which went down well and people just mucked in, knitted, compared notes and chatted! Mission accomplished!
The Saturday morning group was primarily charity knitting with people chattingng away with lots of patterns, some wool and me with a request to find local charities to donate to!
So with mission in hand I’ve been hunting! The Special Care Baby Unit in Cardiff would appreciate cardigans and hats (with or without a vent) but no blankets or angel wraps (for babies born too early). Preemies UK will still appreciate those though!
I contacted a local hospice and will report back at the next charity event for feedback..I havent heard back from two local charities yet but will update when I do! As always if people have a charity to suggest, please do.
The first batch of knitting was sent to loving hands and consisted of 3 blankets, various squares and some oddments and all were gratefully recieved.
The next group is 7-9 on Monday 4th November at 7pm..venue is the same – minster church (see address on right)

Antonia’s first hat!
Saturday morning charity knitting group
The Saturday group is knitting for charity but we will have to charge £2 to cover costs (especially heating in the winter months!!). You can, of course, choose your own charity to knit for but “Loving hands” http://www.lovinghands.org.uk/ have a number of patterns and charities that they support, so will be one that we will be knitting for – mainly for variety and choice.
If you want to choose your own charity, or suggest one you would like added, please let me know!
The group will run from 10am until 12pm (approx!).If like me you often get to 11.30 and start to feel hungry a sandwich is handy so please feel free to bring lunch if you would like to! Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. You may even be lucky occasionally and get cake depending on how busy I am or how much energy I have (or not as the case may be!).
The dates for 2009 are as follows;
Saturday 24th October
Saturday 21st November
We have decided not to have a December group because it’s such a busy time of year…plus if you’re anything like me you’ll be knitting last minute presents that you meant to start months ago in time for Christmas!!
The last knit youtube video – very funny!!

Welcome!
Welcome to the blog for the Big Knitters knitting groups! Those of you who have been to the shop will know what a lovely, friendly and relaxed environment has been created. It is hoped that the groups will be an extention of this!
There will be two groups a month. One, on a Monday evening, and one on a Saturday morning. Please see relevant posts for 2009 dates for each. The groups will be run by me, Antonia. I am a new knitter but have been greatly encouraged by “the girls” and am happy to help where I can. Thankfully there will be expert advice available at the Monday night groups for those, like me, who are just starting out but it is hoped that it will be nice and relaxed and we will all help each other.
As time goes on I hope people will submit photographs of finished items so that they can be proudly displayed on the blog! I will never forget the pride I felt when I knitted my first hat!! Quite an achievement and took much concentration and quite a bit of “expression” along the way!!
If people have any questions about the group you can contact me by email at:
bigknittersgroups@ntlworld.com
or by mobile on 07974 812670 Text is great because I have unlimited texts but not minutes!!I look forward to meeting you but meanwhile please feel free to ask questions.
